The Cúcuta mom: a celebration that doesn't fit into a single Sunday

Some cities have very unique ways of showing affection. In some, love is spoken aloud; in others, it is shown through small, everyday gestures. In Cúcuta, love—especially a mother's love—is usually felt in the kitchen from early in the morning, in the "have you eaten yet?", in the coffee that appears without being asked for, and in that custom so dear to us of gathering around a table even when there is nothing special to celebrate.
Perhaps that is why Mother's Day in our city has never been just a date on the calendar. Yes, it is traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday of May, a custom deeply rooted in Cúcuta households. But this year, the calendar had other plans: since the last Sunday coincides with election day, the celebration has been moved to the previous Sunday.

And while for many that may seem like just a change of date, it is actually an opportunity to remember something important: Mom is not celebrated on just one day. Mom is celebrated always.
Because the Cúcuta mother deserves more than just one Sunday.
She deserves time, long conversations, unhurried after-dinner chats, and moments that remain in our memories long after May ends. This is the essence of the Cúcuta mother. To speak of the Cúcuta mother is to speak of strong women. Women who have learned to move their families forward even on difficult days. Warm, approachable, and generous women, capable of turning any space into a home.
The Cúcuta mother has something very special: she knows how to care for others without making a fuss. She looks out for everyone, even when no one notices the effort it takes to hold so many things together at once. She is the one who asks if you arrived safely, the one who sends fruit "just in case," and the one who insists you have seconds even when you say you're already full.
But she is also the mother who works, starts businesses, leads, organizes, studies, and still finds time to be present.
That is why May ends up feeling so special in Cúcuta. Because beyond the flowers, the gifts, or the family gatherings, this month becomes an excuse to give back a little of everything they do throughout the year. And honestly, a single Sunday never seems like enough.
Celebrating without the rush
Sometimes we believe that celebrating means making big plans. Booking something huge, spending too much, or waiting for "the right date" to arrive. But often, the most valuable memories are born from simple moments: a quiet lunch, an afternoon of conversation, or a meal shared without watching the clock.
That is precisely the beauty of thinking of Mother's Day as a month-long celebration. It removes the pressure of "having to do it exactly on that day" and gives us back what is most important: the intention to share.
May is a great time to visit Mom more often. To take her out for a meal. To pause the daily grind. To listen to her stories all over again, even if we know them by heart. To thank her in ways we don't always say out loud. And, of course, to create new memories.
Celebrations that stay with you
Over time, you realize that the best celebrations aren't necessarily the most extravagant ones, but the ones that make someone feel truly special. Moms tend to remember the company more than the gift. They value a table full of conversation more than perfect decor. They cherish having their children close more than any material item. That’s why, when we think about how to celebrate this month, perhaps the question shouldn't be "what should I give her," but "how do we want to remember this moment?"
Maybe with a special meal.
Maybe with music.
Maybe with a quiet afternoon away from the daily noise.
Maybe just by sharing some quality time.
Because, in the end, that is what turns a date into a memory.
May is also a chance to reconnect
Routine often gets the better of us. Between work, obligations, and the fast pace of everyday life, we put off important conversations, planned visits, and family time. That’s why May feels different. It’s a month that invites us to slow down a little. To look around. To remember that the people we love most deserve our time and attention now, not "when we have space." And perhaps that is the true value of celebrating Mom all month long: realizing that affection shouldn't depend on a single official date. Because even if the calendar changes, the reason to celebrate remains the same.
A tribute to the women who hold it all together
There is something admirable about mothers that is rarely said enough: their ability to be the emotional anchor for an entire family. They are the ones who remember birthdays, organize gatherings, sit with us in silence, and celebrate others' achievements as if they were their own. Often, they are the invisible center around which the home revolves.
The Cúcuta mom, in particular, has that blend of strong character and a huge heart that makes her unforgettable. She can scold you firmly and, five minutes later, ask if you want seconds. She can be exhausted and still worry about everyone else first. She can go through difficult times and still find ways to bring the family together.
That’s why this month is also an opportunity to acknowledge everything we usually take for granted.
A May for sharing with family
Amidst the warm weather, long conversations, and the family traditions that define our region, May becomes one of those perfect months for reconnecting. And it doesn't matter if the celebration happens on the first, second, or last Sunday.
What matters is finding a space to share. A space where mom can rest, feel loved, and enjoy a moment designed especially for her.
An invitation to celebrate mom
This coming May 17th, Hotel Cariongo would like to open its doors to celebrate all those women who make every family a home.
It will be an occasion to share with family, enjoy good food, memorable conversations, and an atmosphere designed to honor mom as she deserves: with affection, tranquility, and special moments.
Because beyond any specific date, May remains the perfect month to give thanks, embrace, and celebrate. And because any day is a good day when it comes to mom.
The best tradition will always be celebrating love
Dates change. Calendars are adjusted. Celebrations move from one Sunday to another. But there are things that remain intact.
Mom's hug.
The way she cares.
A full family table.
Conversations that last for hours.
The feeling of home.
Perhaps that is why Mother's Day will never truly depend on a specific date. Because the love we celebrate that day has always been there. And perhaps that is the true lesson of this May: understanding that we don't need to wait for the "right Sunday" to celebrate those we love most.
Mom should be celebrated when she is present.
When you share time with her.
When you create memories.
When you say thank you.
And fortunately, for that, any day of the month is perfect.
