Eduardo Ramirez Villamizar Museum of Modern Art in Pamplona
Located at Calle 5 #5-75, Pamplona, Norte de Santander, next to the city's main park, the Museum of Modern Art houses a collection of works by one of the greatest exponents of artistic constructivism in Colombia.
Inside this iconic and traditional venue, you will find the legacy of Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar, one of the pioneers of abstract sculpture in Latin America. His constructions are governed by a refined geometry that draws on classical references and the ancestral cultures of the Andes, inspired by the Chitareros, the original indigenous inhabitants of his hometown, Pamplona.
Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar was born in Pamplona on August 23, 1922, and passed away in Bogotá on August 24, 2004. Our artist was a winner of the National Salon of Artists of Colombia.
A leading figure in artistic constructivism, his conceptual abstraction, rooted in intellectual anarchy, was historically influenced by the country's turbulent political life. He began as a figurative painter in the field of expressionism starting in 1950. Later, he created murals with a purist design, treating the void as a material truth.
His sculptural work began around 1960, following the geometric line initiated a decade earlier by Hugo Martínez González, which brought him recognition in several countries across the Americas. He was characterized above all by his high standards and spiritual rigor, traits that defined him as a bold yet personally shy individual. His works serve as a testament to his assimilation of and reaction to his surroundings, which he then translated into value judgments, ultimately leading to a utopian solution in an effort to achieve aesthetic order.
His ashes rest in the Ramírez Villamizar Museum of Modern Art in the city of Pamplona. The majority of his small and medium-sized works are concentrated in the museum that bears his name.
